THE STYLE MAESTRO

From extravagant ball gowns to edgy streetwear, a fashion stylist is the mastermind behind every sartorial masterpiece. Like a tailor sewing together threads of individuality, stylists create unforgettable moments that leave an indelible mark on the fashion landscape.

When it comes to fashion stylists in Pakistan, Amal Qadri, who has been working as a professional fashion stylist for 10 years now, needs no introduction.

With her artist’s eye and an impeccable taste, she has become one of the finest stylists we have today. She has delved well into the depths of the fashion universe, scouring runways, showrooms, and boutiques. She recounts how she started with a mere Facebook group and posting about fashion on Instagram.

THE STYLE MAESTRO

She eventually began helping styling women from different fields including lecturers, doctors, engineers - working women who had no idea how to dress themselves up and had no time to go shop. “That’s how I started as a personal stylist. Then, one day, Anoushey Ashraf and I somehow spoke on Instagram and that’s when she asked me if I could be her stylist and that’s how I started styling her professionally on a morning show. After that, I got a lot of fashion shows, and shoots. Dressing different celebrities for different events and occasions,” shares Amal.

The stylists job goes far beyond picking out clothes. They navigate the ever-changing tides of trends and maintain a finger on the pulse of what’s hot and what’s not. Amidst the chaos, they remain composed, ensuring that every hemline, every button, and every accessory is perfectly in place.

So, as we step into the world of styling, let’s get to know about stylist Amal’s favourite fashion trends and what her style journey has been like so far…

Describe your style in 3 words.

I think my style is edgy, boho and has a hint of chic in it.

First fashion memory?

When I was travelling from Jeddah, KSA to New York, there was a Saudi girl in her abaya and the first thing I noticed were her red snake skin stilettos. I instantly became obsessed and I was probably only 10 at the time. I just thought to myself “wow who is this woman!”. Another thing I vividly remember is that I used to love going to salons for the fashion magazines pile which sat there which piqued my interest more than the makeup and hair people were getting done. Magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar.

Who is your style icon?

Iris Apfel is my style icon. I think she is just brilliant.

Are there any experiences or lessons that have stuck with you in your career?

THE STYLE MAESTRO

Colours used to be a barrier at one point and some shapes I didn’t feel comfortable in wearing. As a teenager, I was very into the grunge and goth look and used to wear only earthy tones. But then a very close friend of mine suggested that bright colours leave a lasting impact and convinced me to try them. That stuck with me and I started wearing bright colours.

Which brand/designer would you love to do styling for?

I would love to style and create looks for accessories. Build looks on just sunglasses or a handbag. That would allow me to really play with the look. I would love to collaborate with any international brand for that kind of project.

What do you wish someone had told you when you started?

I wish they had told me never to doubt my own self-worth.

What’s the most fun part of your job?

Fun part is when I’m given true freedom to create a look from scratch without any boundaries.

What should girls steer clear of?

Wear whatever they want to but make sure they wear it with finesse.

What work are you most proud of?

I really enjoyed doing a hijab look for a shampoo product. However, I think I still need to take my work to another level.

THE STYLE MAESTRO

What challenges do you have as a stylist?

Trying to explain my vision to the client. And the demands they make in a small budget.

Who in your life brings you good vibes and positive energy?

Whenever I’m doubting my work, I vent out to my husband and kids who listen to me. That helps me put things back into perspective.

Everyone loves a good deal, what are some of your favourite places to find budget buys?

Anywhere I go, I make sure I’ll visit the flea market to find unique and fun pieces.

What items do you feel are worth splurging on?

Always splurge on your basic wardrobe.

THE STYLE MAESTRO

What is your favourite item in your closet?

My mom’s vintage paisley jumpsuit and teal green dress from ’80s. I actually had Syra Yousuf wear it for an award show because of a last-minute wardrobe malfunction.

What are a few tips you would like for people to remember concerning overall self-care and beauty?

Always make sure that you smell nice because whoever is hanging around you needs to feel welcomed. And the way you smell makes it very clear. Secondly, I really feel hands and nails need to be always clean. They don’t have to be manicured or pedicured, just neat looking.

If you could travel back in time to one fashion era, where would you end up?

The ’50s! I love the polished and femme fatal look of that era. The attention to detail in the tailoring and the impeccable hairstyles, the cat eye, and all the fabulous accessories: hats, gloves, and jewellery fascinate me.

Job of a stylist can be very stressful at times. How do you cope with the pressure?

After a crazy project, I actually try taking a break. Didn’t do that before but now I do it and it really helps to focus with a fresh start.

Do you have a favourite character? Especially style-wise?

So, lately I’m enjoying the characters of ‘Emily in Paris’. They distinctively have amazing styles appropriate to their character and age.

THE STYLE MAESTRO

What makes you passionate about fashion?

I have a passion for fashion because it’s in your control and it can be changed and be about who, what and how you want it to be. Obviously, trends help you to change your style along the way.

A celebrity whose style you admire?

I’ve always admired Cate Blanchett - she can pull all kinds of styles.

What would you consider the most rewarding aspect of being a personal stylist?

Changing how my clients feel. Usually they’re always doubting and worried what others would think about how they’re looking, the day they don’t think about these two things, is the day I’ll feel I have accomplished and feel rewarded.

What are your beauty essentials?

I’m usually bare faced and make sure to use proper creams and sunscreen. I end up just using mascara and kajal and gloss, if I’m heading out. I love using the Bobbi Brown highlighter as it’s perfect for my complexion, and translucent powder by Laura Mercier.

What’s next for you?

Take my personal style to another level and a master class soon.
