Japan proudly claims a rich and varied culture surrounding its cuisine. Japanese cuisine is known the world over for its use of unique, nutritious, fresh and mouth-watering ingredients, as well as its remarkable presentation. In fact, Japan has always been famous for its unique approach to cooking, combining a world of exotic ingredients and aromatic spices to create truly inspiring dishes. No wonder traditional Japanese food has been added to UNESCO’s ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’ list.

One of the first things you notice about a Japanese meal is that, traditionally, all the different elements are separated into small dishes. This is a dining style that originated in the Kamakura period, and it was mainly adopted from the classical Chinese style of serving food, as well as the way Buddhist tea ceremony is served. Traditional Japanese cuisine uses locally sourced fresh ingredients and utilises special cooking techniques and utensils to bring out the natural flavours. Presentation is also key. Different dishes are served on or in complimentary types of tableware, varying in shape, size, colour and pattern.

Sushi, a Japanese delicacy, is truly enjoyed by connoisseurs. A dish that was born in ancient times, sushi originated from the process of preserving fish in fermented rice. Today it is made with vinegared rice and a range of components such as raw fish and vegetables, presented in a number of ways and shapes. Besides sushi, rice and noodles are the two primary staples of the Japanese diet. The traditional cuisine of Japan or kappo is based on rice with miso soup and other dishes; there is an emphasis on seasonal ingredients. Side dishes often consist of pickled vegetables, and vegetables cooked in broth. Seafood is common, often grilled, but also served raw as sashimi. Perhaps, Japanese cuisine is an example of originality, diversity and usefulness, which is why it is one of the favourite foods of many people living in different parts of the world including Pakistan.
