Russia to build its own space station The Russian Federal Agency which is also known as Roscosmos is planning to build its own space station by 2024. The move comes in as the current international space station is supposed to end its operation by 2024. Launched in 1998 as a joint venture between American agency NASA and the Russian Roscosmos, the main aim of the International space station was to act as a laboratory in lower earth orbit to be used for exploratory missions to the Moon, Mars and other asteroids. Currently, it is being mainly operated by the US, Canada, Germany, Japan and Russia.

Russia, on the other hand, has said it will support the ISS till 2024, but after then it will unlock its modules and construct its own base. Russia also plans to send manned missions to space till 2030, and as such wants it sole control station over the horizon.  Also, the principal difference from the currently operating International Space Station will be the new Russian station’s high-altitude orbit with a 64. Arctic shelf seas. From 8-degree inclination, which would make up to 90 percent of the Russian territory visible from on board, including the ISS, which has an orbit inclination of 51.6 degrees, no more than five percent of the Russian territory is currently visible. Russia is currently the only nation capable of getting astronauts to and from the ISS via its Soyuz rockets, following the disbanding of NASA’s space shuttle programme.

World War explosives could cure diabetes
Researchers at Yale University have proposed that a chemical used in the First World War could cure type 2 Diabetes. The chemical which is called DNP (2,4 dinitrophenol) was used in industries by the French army to produced weapons. This chemical was mixed with picric acid. The workers who got exposed to this chemical began to sweat, suffer high temperatures and lose weight. Scientists at Stanford University also observed that DNP was responsible for increasing metabolism rates up to 50 percent and resulted in burning up of fat and carbohydrates. In 1930s pills were out in the market which contained DNP to control weight but were declared unsafe as a man died due to consumption. Russian army also used DNP to keep their soldiers warm but later discontinued the use due to weight loss.

Now scientists at Yale have discovered a diluted version of the chemical which is almost 100 times weaker than the original and can be used to reverse type2 diabetes. The study has been so far conducted on mice in the lab but scientists are keen to start a human trial.

“A low-dose infusion of DNP that was 100-fold lower than toxic levels significantly reduced blood glucose and insulin concentrations in a rodent model of Type 2 diabetes,” said lead author Dr Gerald Shulman.

The Food Standard Agency cannot ban this chemical as it’s not used as a medicine, but mainly in pesticides. They also state that consumption might cause nausea, vomiting, restlessness, flushed skin, sweating, dizziness, headaches, rapid respiration and irregular heartbeat, possibly leading to coma and death.
