I want to become a hero

I am a 16-year-old boy from Rawalpindi. I am tired with the old hobbies that everyone is interested in. I want to do something different. I want to change the world. I want to obtain super powers and want to use them for the benefit of people. I have watched a lot of superhero movies like ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’; ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’. And I am so inspired by them. The characters are always fighting against evil and constantly struggling hard to save the world from evil powers and doing good for humanity. Guru, I also want to be like one of the superheroes like Superman or Spiderman. When I shared my thoughts with my friends, they just laughed at my idea. Now, they make fun of me. Guru, what’s wrong with the idea of becoming a hero and serving humanity? I want to become a hero. What should I do?

At your age, people normally dream big. I don’t blame you for wanting to become a hero but, dear, you need to understand that what you see in movies is not always the truth. These superhero movies are popular as they are well made but everyone knows that they are not real. Superhero movies are based on fabricated stories and all characters are fictitious, too. Well, they appeal to the masses owing to their strong cinematography and execution. So don’t be duped by the idea of turning yourself into one of the characters. You are young and young minds are impressionable. I respect your views and appreciate your will to do something good. But dear, you cannot change the world like you have seen in the movies neither can you assume super powers. This is simply not possible. Well, if you really want to serve humanity then focus on your career, excel in your chosen field/studies and when you become something then you can always do something good for mankind. But to achieve that position or status, you really have to work hard. As far as your friends are concerned, just ignore them. But yes, don’t repeat your ‘great’ ideas in front of them again. I want to go to Egypt
Dear Guru,
I am an ardent fan of your column and my Friday is not complete without reading US magazine. I am a 15-year-old girl. I study in class nine in one of the prestigious schools of Karachi. I am one of the brilliant students in the class. I belong to a middle class family. Guru, I have always been interested in history; it is my favourite subject. This year, our school management has decided to take students of senior classes to Egypt and take them to some historical places. The trip has been arranged by the school but whoever is interested in going has to pay for the visa fee, ticket and other expenses. Since we are going in a group we are getting everything on cheaper rates. Guru, this is an excellent opportunity for me to see the pyramids of Egypt and all those fantastic historical sites. But unfortunately, my parents are reluctant. According to them, they cannot afford to pay for my trip. Guru, I am so upset. All my friends are going; no one has money issue except for me. Guru, we are going by mid July and the last date to submit the application is 25 May. Guru, I have talked to my rich and generous aunt who is willing to sponsor my trip. So, should I talk to my parents about it? I don’t want to miss this amazing trip.

I can see your passion for history and I can understand how much you want to go to Egypt and I truly respect your feelings. But we don’t always get what we want. I know it’s a wonderful opportunity for you to explore the world but at the same time, you have to keep your parents’ financial position in mind. They are already paying your high school fee. You must be grateful to your parents for sending you to an elite school despite their financial constraint as they want a bright future for you. Since all your other friends are from affluent families, their parents can easily pay for their trip. But in this time of inflation, it must be difficult for your parents to take out extra money for your trip. As far as your aunt is concerned who is willing to sponsor your trip, I advise you to take your parents’ permission first. If they are comfortable with the idea of sponsorship, then yes you can go ahead. But if they are not, then you should not pressurize your parents. Don’t go against their will. Good luck!
