Dear Ed,

I was totally blown over to see Sanam Saeed in Us today (Dec 7 issue)! She is an amazing actor and I also loved her answers which were insightful and interesting. Since I am a fan of hers, I was happy to learn that her favourite sports and mine are the same. This girl has substance and is not just a beauty without brains. Way to go, Sanam; keep making us proud!

I just need to say one more thing: when you publish such great celebs, please use better printing material to do the write up and the celeb some justice.

Hey Ed,

‘In a nutshell’ by Tooba Ghani was really fabulous. Loved her style and the interesting manner in which she discoursed the phrase we have been using for such a long time without knowing how it originated. Please continue the section as it’s not only interesting but informative as well.

Hey Ed,

I enjoyed the cover story ‘The ungodly genes’ by Dr Javeria Hayat. Trust a doctor to write such stuff and make it interesting as well. Anyway, a light story was a welcome read, after quite some time. Please don’t think of it as criticism; meaningful cover stories make Us a true representative of the youth in the country, but our minds rest and recreation as well. So The ungodly genes was just what the doctor ordered and I eagerly await its next part.

Hey Ed,

It seems medical doctors are essentially great writers. We read so much good stuff penned by doctors. At times I feel that it’s doctors’ job requirement to be able to write well. I am sure Saad Javed, Awais Aftab, Asif Nawaz, etc. are great doctors now, but they were great writers, too. Yes, I used the past tense, because as busy doctors they can hardly be expected to contribute stories to Us. But, I still remember the days when the doctors and co. used to contribute almost regularly.

I think King Edward’s should be complimented on promoting literary activities among its students. Without a doubt they not only produce fine doctors, but fine human beings as well. It’s gratifying to see stories by doctors and ‘The ungodly genes’ by Dr Javeria Hayat Khan was very interesting. Keep it up, docs, all the best.

Reflection

Narrated by Al-Bara’ bin ‘Azib

The Prophet (S.A.W) ordered us to do seven (things) and forbade us from seven. He ordered us to visit the patients, to follow the funeral procession, to reply to the sneezer (i.e., say to him, ‘Yarhamuka-l-lah (May Allah bestow His Mercy upon you), if he says ‘Al-hamdulillah’ (Praise be to Allah), to help others to fulfill their oaths, to help the oppressed, to greet (whomever one should meet), and to accept the invitation (to a wedding banquet). He forbade us to wear golden rings, to use silver utensils, to use Mayathir (cushions of silk stuffed with cotton and placed under the rider on the saddle), the Qasiyya (linen clothes containing silk brought from an Egyptian town), the Istibraq (thick silk) and the Dibaj (another kind of silk). (See Hadith No. 539 and 753).
