Dear Ed,

This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading Us for years. I appreciate the way you guys dedicated a whole issue to Harry Potter; it simply took my breath away! It had all that a Potterhead could ask for, and that too from my all time favourite writers: Faiza, Unsa, Rutaba, Amna and Maieda. I especially loved Faiza Hameed’s “The rainbow connection”. It was good to see her byline after such a long time. “A rude awakening” by Rabia Tufail was thought provoking and she made her case in a very convincing way.

The back cover page was a bit disappointing, though; it did not go with the theme at all.

Hello all,

The piece “Questions, please!” (Aug 11) was wonderful. There are all kinds of participants in such events. While it can be a bit frustrating at times, it’s always heartening to see speakers encouraging their audience to ask and interact. If anything, the Q/A session is essential for speakers to know they haven’t talking to a wall. To the late-comers, as I have experienced myself, it can help give an overview of what the whole session was about.

Query

AoA Editor,

I am hoping to write for Us. I am aware of the word count and required documents. I have a few questions. Are contributors paid for their work? Are the contributors required to send illustrations along with their articles?

Other than that if there is anything I need to know please let me know and like always you guys are doing a brilliant job. Fridays are not Fridays without Us.

FK

Yes, we pay our contributors. The article does not need to be illustrated from the contributors’ end. Just make sure your articles are interesting and youth-oriented:)

Assalamoalaikum Ed,

I read your magazine regularly and I want to send you some poems and other stuff to be published. I want to send you a motivational kind of article. Under which section should I send it?

Also, I wanted to ask you if you inform your contributors when their piece is selected and/or published? It would be great if you do so I could buy that particular magazine.

Maha Imtiaz

You can email your articles and stories to us.mag@thenews.com.pk; for poems, the email id is uspoetscorner@gmail.com.

You can also check our Facebook page (Us - Magazine for the youth, The News International) where the magazine is uploaded every Friday to know whether or not your work has been selected. :)

RIP Dr. Pfau

A lot of good people left the world over the week. I was especially touched by the news of Dr. Pfau’s demise. Even those who haven’t met her were inspired by her selflessness and persistence in serving this country. People like Edhi and Dr. Pfau ensured nobody in distress was turned away; religion, age, background were never an issue. I hope the legacy they have given us (namely Edhi Foundation and The Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre) prosper and continue to give hope to Pakistanis looking for help or advice.

US MAILReflection

Narrated by ‘Amir bin Rabi’a

I saw the Prophet on his Mount praying Nawafil by nodding his head, whatever direction he faced, but Allah’s Apostle never did the same in offering the compulsory prayers. Narrated Salim: At night’Abdullah bin ‘Umar used to offer the prayer on the back of his animal during the journey and never cared about the direction he faced. Ibn ‘Umar said, “Allah’s Apostle used to offer the optional prayer on the back of his Mount facing any direction and also used to pray the Witr on it but never offered the compulsory prayer on it.”
