The reality of crowdsourcing

Do you want to design a website? Need to code a program? Require virtual assistance? Have a book awaiting compilation? Anything is just one click away if you just know the way!

In today’s era of rapidly growing technology, a dire need of “specialization” has emerged which has ultimately given rise to the need of hiring various professionals who can take proper responsibilities regarding the specified tasks assigned to them. Over the recent years, these developments caused the managers to search for individuals having a specified set of skills and experience relevant to a specific area, hence, the concept of crowdsourcing emerged.

Crowdsourcing is technically a process of getting work or collecting funds from various sources. This word has been created by combining the two words “crowd” and “outsourcing”. It usually involves an online platform instead of physical presence of the employees. The core idea is to get bulk of work online and dedicate it to your “crowd”of employees to get it done.

The most common example of this practice is the “Wikipedia”. It’s an encyclopedia developed by writers and editors and now others can add information to it as well. It has become one of the biggest platforms for accessing information.

The other example is life insurance and general insurance. The company employees a senior experienced manager who then hires different agents or sales representatives (the crowd) to market and sell the insurance policies in their targeted areas.

Crowdsourcing makes it easy for the forex trading websites to function effectively, too. They hire a group of people and allow them a minimal initial deposit to start their transactions. Many software programs have been designed to manage this complex area of work with so many people involved. As a result, you can run your forex business from home.

Given the scenario, many insurers, lawyers, accountants, banks, hosting agents, credit and loan providers, and fundraising companies have hired a number of people to do their work so that they can get the most out of the deal.

Types of crowdsourcing

Crowd design

If you are looking for someone to design your logo or a website, just contact a crowdsourcer and he will provide you with all that you want. Interested designers will contact you and you will get multiple options to work with.

CrowdFunding

Crowdfunding means you are asking a crowd of people to pool money for your desired projects. For example, if you have a project in which you need to invest say one million rupees. Arranging this much alone will be no easy task, so you will contact a crowdfund manager to raise it for you. Hundreds of crowdsourcers will be there for you to manage your desired fund in a very short span of time; the deadlines are less than 60 days on average.

Microtasks

Microtasking means to break down a large task into smaller ones so that it will be much easier to do and take much less time to be completed. Say you have 500 images for your website and you want unique captions for all of them; you can ask a crowd of 500 people to do this for you. You can get this done in no time as compared to the effort and time you would have spent.

In the emerging economies, crowdsourcing is fundamental to the growth and sustainability of every industry and it is also beneficial for both ends - the workers (often termed as freelancers) and remote employers.
