Hello Editor,

Good job, Saniyah! The story unfolds in an interesting way, though the description is quite disturbing. But, what else can writers show when this is the reality? This is what happens in Thar! Not just the cruelties of weather conditions, people in Thar also have to suffer at the hands of feudal lords. It was heart-wrenching to read how Siddu had to toil all day to earn a single pail of water. It’s hard to image how miserable their lives are.  Let’s hope things turn out well for Siddu.

And yes, it’s great to know that young writers are also addressing these issues through writing such stories.

Hello Editor,

The piece “Chai dhabas - a safe haven for youth” (April 14) by Hafsa Saeed made me nostalgic! I remember hanging out with my friends at Sufi dhaba in Karachi University. After submitting our tough assignments and semester exams, we used to visit the dhaba and treat ourselves with all sorts of things. We loved eating parathas, omelette, fried vegetables, milk chai, lassi, kachoris and so many other things. But now, I avoid eating unhealthy food! I am sorry for this but the reality is that most of the local dhabas prepare food in unhygienic conditions. Even if we want cheap and easy recreation, we should not compromise on our health. I think the management should now work on making that place more hygienic!

Hi Ed,

‘The world is your canvas’ by Maheen Aziz was enlightening, especially for those of us who would like to choose the less travelled path. Many of the traditional professions are saturated and let’s face it: all of us are not geared to become engineers and doctors. The cover story was great, but I have a funny feeling about its end. I am afraid something horrible will happen either to Sidu or Nimu. Or both! Please Saniyah, don’t overdose us with truth; sometimes a little deviation from the truth is good for soul. That’s why I love ‘Comic Relief’.

Query

Hey Eddy,

I have written a poem and was wondering if you could publish it in your magazine.

Rohma Mumtaz

Rohma, you can send your poem to uspoetscorner@gmail.com; just make sure whatever you send is interesting and relevant to youth.

AoA Ed,

I am an aspiring writer and have written some articles for my college magazine. Now, I am thinking of writing pieces for your magazine.

I have few questions in mind: how can I send my articles? Are there any specific guidelines that I should follow while writing for your magazines?  Thank you!

Khaula Rafeeq

Writing for our magazine is easy and simple! Just see whatever you write is for our target audience: youth. You can write about college/university events; we also take book and movie reviews, fiction and opinion pieces. The word count for one page is 550-650 words, for a two-page story it is 1100-1200. And, you can email your articles or stories to us.mag@thenews.com.pk.

Narrated by Ibn Umar (R.A)

When the Muslims arrived at Medina, they used to assemble for the prayer, and used to guess the time for it. During those days, the practice of Adhan for the prayers had not been introduced yet. Once they discussed this problem regarding the call for prayer. Some people suggested the use of a bell like the Christians, others proposed a trumpet like the horn used by the Jews, but Umar was the first to suggest that a man should call (the people) for the prayer; so Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W) ordered Bilal (RA) to get up and pronounce the Adhan for prayers.
