Spotlight
Moonlight
Cast: Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Ashton Sanders, Jharrel Jerome, Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali, Alex Hibbert
Director: Barry Jenkins
Tagline: This is the story of a lifetime.
Drama; tells the story of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world.
Based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney.
Had a budget of $1.5 million; has made around $28 million since its release in October last year.
Received critical acclaim upon release, drawing praise for the direction and performances, although some, including actor Samuel L. Jackson, have dismissed the film as an ‘Oscar-bait’ movie.
The three actors who play the film’s protagonist Chiron - Rhodes, Sanders, and Hibbert - did not meet during production; the director wanted them to shape their own portrayals of the character without being influenced by each other.
Score composed by Nicholas Britell.
