Dear Editor,

In this week’s issue (25 April), I read Alisha Qasim’s article “What Gen Z really wants from work” with deep interest, and as a member of Gen Z myself, I felt both seen and hopeful. It’s rare to come across an article that captures the spirit of our generation so accurately. The idea that work should have meaning resonates strongly with me and my friends. We aren’t driven solely by money or titles; we care deeply about whether our efforts contribute to something larger. Whether it is climate action, mental health, or ethical leadership, we want to be part of organizations that reflect our values, not just their bottom line.

I also appreciated the discussion on mental health. It’s encouraging to see companies responding with therapy allowances and open conversations, though many still have a long way to go. As Alisha rightly points out, we’re not interested in performative gestures—we want real, structural change. Some critics may view our refusal to settle as impatience or lack of loyalty. But we are simply unwilling to accept toxic environments and unfulfilling work as “just the way things are.” And perhaps that’s not a weakness - it’s our greatest strength.

Dear Editor,

This week’s issue (18 April issue) had a lot of good stuff to read. The cover story, Prickly perfection by Hissam Ali was really interesting and informative. I love cacti and succulents and have many in my garden. They are easy to maintain and a treat for the senses. I also read the review by Gulnaz Khair Bakhsh of Three Daughters of Eve written by Elif Shafak. Shafak's exploration of faith, identity and the complexities of friendship is enthralling, and beautifully narrated. In the ‘Poets’ Corner’ I loved “In the quiet corners” by Syeda Maqsoom. She is a gifted poet and her words truly touched my heart. Keep up the good work, Team Us!

Dear Ed,

In countries where the weather remains cold for most of the year, school holidays typically fall in June and July. Pakistan follows the British pattern, with summer vacations starting in June. However, considering the extreme heat, educational institutions should ideally close in May when temperatures become unbearable. Through Us, I would like to request the concerned authorities to reconsider this schedule and adapt our academic calendar according to our local climate and the well-being of students.
