SPOTLIGHT

THE GREEN ROOM

Snow White

Cast: Rachel Zegler, Andrew Burnap, and Gal Gadot

Director: Marc Webb

Tagline: The fairest of them all.

  • Musical fantasy adventure; a princess (Zegler) forms an alliance with seven magical characters and a bandit (Burnap) to liberate her kingdom from the Evil Queen (Gadot).
  • Is a live-action reimagining of Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), which was based on the 1812 Brothers Grimm fairy tale ‘Snow White’.
  • Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote new songs for the film.
  • Had an estimated budget of around US$240–270 million. Has grossed around $168 million, bombing at the box office. Has been projected to lose Disney as much as $115 million.
  • Has received negative reviews from critics who felt the film was bad and bland.
  • Was the subject of controversy because of several factors, including the casting of an actress of Latin descent as Snow White (a character originally described as having skin “as white as snow”); the reimagining of the Seven Dwarfs as seven magical CGI characters; its pseudo-progressive tone; and Zegler and Gadot’s political views.
  • Production on Disney’s live-action remake of Tangled (2010) has been suspended indefinitely following Snow White’s underperformance.
