Indian born British actor Saeed Jaffery, who belonged to an irreplaceable league of fine actors, passed away yesterday, leaving behind a void in Indian cinema that will be hard, if not impossible, to fill. He was 86 and was suffering age-related ailments. Born in Punjab, Saeed Jaffery started his career as an actor in theatre and gradually moved on to films. He worked with internationally renowned acting luminaries like Sean Connery, Michael Caine (The Man Who Would Be King), and Pierce Brosnan (The Deceivers) as well as world class directors like Satyajit Ray (Shatranj Ke Khiladi) and Richard Attenborough (Gandhi). Jaffery was also known for his work in television. His notable works in Bollywood include Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Henna, Chashme-Baddoor, Judaai and Dil, Ajooba. His character ‘Lallan Mian’ in Chashme Baddoor is perhaps his most loved avatar. Saeed Jaffery was the first Indian to receive the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to drama; it was one amongst many accolades he received during his career.

“Goodbye dear Sayeed,” Shakhar Kapur tweeted, as tributes from Bollywood poured in all day. “Started my career with u in Masoom. Cant forget ur kindness n enthusiasm for your art n others.”
