The melancholic collaborative effort, ‘Big ol Deities’ that officially releases today and features music giants Ali Suhail, Shehzad Noor (aka Shorbanoor), Saif Abbas and Ibrahim Akram (aka Iba and a member of Saakin) is quite a song.

Speaking to Instep about it, Shorbanoor, who penned the song described the meaning behind it and noted, “This song is best described as a disjointed dual monologue, which never quite becomes a conversation; the two speak in parallel, till the last refrain. These are two deities – as real or imagined as the listener would like them to be – who control the destinies of large swathes of humanity.

“By turns, they jeer at the existence of the men whose lives they are responsible for, and goad them into action. Who those actions will serve is arguable.

“These gods, powerful as they are relative to mortals, are bitter about their own limitations, and compete with each other for power and influence. Not so different than their creation.

“This is probably the least seemingly opaque of my songs, and you have Ali to thank for that. It’s really a joke about the control we have over our own lives, and how we soothe ourselves. We are the punchline, of course.”
