After having a glorious run during the American award season, Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri emerged as the big winner during Sunday night’s British Academy Film Awards in London.

The film picked up five awards including best film, best British film and best actress, for Frances McDormand.

“Our film is a hopeful one in lots of ways, but it’s also an angry one,” said writer-director McDonagh. “As we’ve seen this year, sometimes anger is the only way to get people to listen and to change.”

Other big winners of the night included actress Allison Janney, who picked up the best supporting actress trophy for playing mother to ice skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya.

Guillermo del Toro picked up the best director prize for his film, The Shape of Water, which also won in music and production design category.

Gary Oldman’s portrayal of Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour landed him the best actor trophy while filmmaker James Ivory took home the prize for best adapted screenplay prize for Call Me By Your Name ahead of the likes of Aaron Sorkin, who was nominated for Molly’s Game.

The British ceremony also recognized the work of director Ridley Scott, known for films like Blade Runner, Alien, Thelma and Louise and Gladiator. He received the honour of the BAFTA Fellowship.

Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya, 28, won the rising star award.
