After making us unbelievably curious, first with its unconventional promotions and later with its teaser trailer, Asim Abbasi’s debut feature film, Cake, is finally here with its official trailer. And it has to be said that this story of familial bonds and what happens when they break, could very well be the film we’ve been waiting for.

Starring Sanam Saeed, Aamina Sheikh, Adnan Malik, Mohammed Ahmed, Beo Zafar, Hira Hussain, Faris Khalid and Mikaal Zulfiqar (in a special appearance), the trailer of Cake provides greater insight into the Jamali family that form the crux of the film.

Sheikh and Saeed star as sisters Zareen and Zara respectively in this family drama. While Zara is overseas, Zareen is living at home with their elderly parents. It makes for nuanced beginning.

Saeed as Zara comes home when she learns that her father is in the hospital. Playful moments follow as the sisters find their way back to each other at first, as does the rest of the family. As the Jamali family heads to their farmhouse to celebrate the anniversary of the parents, things begin to unravel. The sisters struggle, secrets come undone and estranged relationships take center-stage.

In the age of garish, over-the-top cinema, here is a film that has subtle shades and with Mo Azmi helming cinematography and The Sketches providing music, Cake has potential to lend a much more cohesive identity to the loud world of Pakistani cinema where every film borders on over-the-top.

The trailer, launched at Nueplex cinema earlier this week, brought the film’s stars out to the red carpet, in fine form. Apart from the cast’s presence including Adnan Malik, Sanam Saeed and Aamina Sheikh, industry insiders such as actor-writer Yasir Hussain, director Saqib Malik also attended the event.

Speaking during a question and answer session during the launch event, Sanam Saeed spoke about how it would be difficult to pick up another script after Cake.

“Cake is a game changer for me personally. It’s going to be tough picking up another script after this beautifully structured, emotionally charged and humorous script. Cake helped me prepare for grievances and reminded me of the importance of family. The process challenged me as an actor and has helped me grow. The laughter and tears in Cake are from the heart,” she said.

Adnan Malik noted how the film was made with pure intentions, saying, “When something is made with pure intentions and true love, the love shines through to the end of the product, whether it’s a cake or a film (or in this case both in one!) Get ready for an emotional journey!”

Aamina Sheikh, who returns to cinema with Cake, also spoke about the film and noted how it has the potential to be a game-changer. “Can’t wait to serve the whole Cake to our audience on the 30th of March; I’m certain it’ll ring true to home and bring authenticity to our Pakistani audience. Cake is definitely a stepping stone towards forming an identity of Pakistani cinema.”
