After winning the Academy Award twice, filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy bags three nominations for her documentary, A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness at the 38th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards. The categories include those of Best Documentary, Outstanding Short Documentary and Outstanding Music & Sound in which her short film has been nominated. A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness is about a woman in Pakistan who was sentenced to death for falling in love and becomes a rare survivor of the country’s harsh judicial system.

“My team and I are honored to have received three Emmy nominations and aim to bring the statues home,” Sharmeen expressed in a press statement after receiving the nominations. “At SOC Films, we hope that our work will spark difficult conversations that eventually lead to a change in mindsets. We have a long way to go with honor killings, which continue to impact the lives of thousands of women across the world. Through our work, we will continue to push the envelope aspiring to leave a more humane world for the next generation.”

The nominations were announced on Tuesday by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) in New York. Sharmeen has won three Emmy Awards previously including ‘Best Documentary’ and ‘Outstanding Editing: Documentary and Long Form’ for Saving Face and ‘Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary’ for her documentary Children of the Taliban.

The News and Documentary Awards ceremony will take place on October 5, 2017, at Lincoln Centre’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City and will be attended by over 1000 television and media personnel.
