It looks like Ben Affleck’s run as Batman could get very, very short. Officially, Affleck is still Batman as was confirmed by Warners’ film studio chief Toby Emmerich who told THR: “Ben is our Batman. We love him as Batman. We want to keep him in the cowl as long as we can.”

Reality, however, is very different. After starring in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, there were rumours that Ben Affleck would helm his own Batman film, as actor and director. His run as Batman seemed safe since an Avengers-esque multiple superhero film, Justice League, is releasing with Affleck’s Batman/Bruce Wayne leading from the front. But if rumours are to be believed, then Affleck will be replaced once JL is out and done with.

A report in The Hollywood Reporter notes, “a source with knowledge of the situation says that the studio is working on plans to usher out Affleck’s Batman — gracefully, addressing the change in some shape or form in one of the upcoming DC films.”

Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that Matt Reeves, Planet of the Apes franchise director will direct the standalone Batman film.

In the end, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Affleck could back to writing and directing films that have merit like Gone Baby Gone and The Town.
