Produced by Irfan Kiani, Wajd – Volume 1 contains eight
songs and will be released exclusively on Patari.
Singer-songwriter Hadiqa Kiani is a pioneering musician, a fact no one can deny. In a career spanning several decades, Kiani has delivered several entertaining albums and a bevy of hit singles. She is someone who can sing in multiple languages and experiment with a slew of genres (like classical, folk, pop and devotional) because she does it with sincerity and heart.
From appearing on Coke Studio to judging the inaugural edition of Pakistan Idol to singing TV soundtracks to representing Pakistan at foreign shores – there is nothing that Kiani can’t do.
And now she is raring to return to the world of music as she has announced the launch of Wajd – Volume 1, a project that aims to “revive and preserve the region’s core musical heritage and resuscitate Pakistani folk culture by promoting instruments, poetry and timeless melodies in an unequivocal manner”.
Wajd – Volume I is produced by Irfan Kiani (Hadiqa’s brother and longtime collaborator) and contains eight songs in total and will see the accomplished singer singing in at least six regional languages such as Punjabi, Saraiki, Sindhi, Balochi, Pashto and Urdu. In addition, the album will feature Hadiqa playing the guitar and for the first time she will also be heard playing the Balochi Damboor. Producer Irfan Kiani has used several regional and classical instruments on the upcoming record such as the Sarod, Damboor (Damburo), Saz Baglama, Rabab, Sitar, Harmonium, Bansuri, Sarangi and many others.
In a press statement, Hadiqa and Irfan, explaining the musical philosophy behind the album, noted: “Wajd is not only an audio album but a musical journey that aims to explore lost traditions, the freedom of ownership of the Eastern folk tradition, the individuality of each artist and instrument free from the superficial and over-processing of digital recording and the stripping away of grandiose arrangements to reveal a simple layer of musical truth. We are honoured to have collaborated with Pakistan’s most talented artists to bring this journey to life, and look forward to evolving as an artist myself as each song and Volume evolves.”
Conceptualized, visualized and directed by Abdullah Harris, Wajd – Volume 1 chapters have been shot in “single-take format in natural daylight”. The first chapter will be released in March 2017 and all songs (chapters) will be exclusively released on Patari, the ultimate home of Pakistani music.
