Ryan Phillippe, known worldwide for his breakthrough role in the film Cruel Intentions as well as a string of films made in the late nineties, hasn’t found success in films in a long, long time. And like most actors of his generation, Phillippe has placed his attention on the world of television. Turns out, it was a smart bet because the actor stole the show from pretty much everyone in the first season of the murder mystery series, Secret and Lies, in the role of Ben Crawford, which aired last year. While the crime anthology series will continue in the second season with a new crime sans Phillippe, the actor has quickly and quietly moved on to his next, which is the TV adaptation of the hit Mark Wahlberg film, Shooter.
The series, pitched as an action thriller, will premiere next month and will show Phillippe take on the role of Bob Lee Swagger. The show’s official Twitter feed confirmed the release date and stated, “To clear his name & find the truth — he has to survive. Ryan Phillippe stars as Bob Lee Swagger.”
Making its debut on USA network on November 15, the show’s original premiere date was moved from July after a sniper attack in Dallas that month. The premiere was later moved to the fall schedule. Mark Wahlberg, meanwhile, has taken on the role of executive producer; both the film and the upcoming series are based on the book, Point of Impact, by Stephen Hunter. Whether Shooter becomes another hit for USA Network akin to the Emmy award-winning Mr. Robot and Suits, will be determined in the coming days ahead.
