Music producer Sharif Awan continues to make headlines for Tehzeeb Foundation’s musical compilation Indus Raag: Music Beyond Borders. Earlier this year, the producer was in the limelight for winning a gold medal at the Global Music Awards where he was one amongst nine other gold medalists from all over the world.  However, the list of acknowledgements doesn’t stop there.

The list of nominees for the Independent Music Awards 2016, one of the most credible and well known platforms for indie music worldwide, has been released and it turns out that Awan is one of the 400 nominees on that list. The producer has been nominated in two categories: World Music and Special Edition Craft, and the winners will be announced on 12th November at Lincoln’s Centre in New York. While Pakistani music has been heard and appreciated all over the world, this is indeed one of the rare occasions when a Pakistani project is acknowledged at so many different international platforms.

Awan spoke to Instep about his achievements: “It’s not in my interest; it’s all about national interest. This is what organizations should be doing. Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Khawaja Khursheed Anwer started this project as Ahang-e-Khusravi which was paused during General Zia-ul-Haq’s tenure. I simply continued this.”

Indus Raag is also Pakistan’s first Grammy entry: Amongst the 12,000 entries that come in every year, only 99 of them get selected and Indus Raag is one of them.
