But what everyone may not be aware of is her feud with another supermodel, Naomi Campbell. Banks has maintained this stance for many years that Campbell mistreated her in the beginning of her career. However, in a recent interview with a Norwegian talk show, Banks admitted that the fiery icon of the ‘90s still scares her even today.
“I got to Paris, and it was very difficult. I did really well really fast, but then the industry was saying, ‘Oh, look out Naomi Campbell, here comes Tyra Banks! So Naomi Campbell, sit your butt down,’ ” Banks said. “It wasn’t fair to Naomi, but her response was . . . to this day, I’m very scared of her. It was very difficult—like some of my lowest times of my life—dealing with that.”
The two supermodels were able to sort out their differences in 2005 when they appeared on Banks’s talk show to make amends after not speaking for 14 years. “The press had cast Naomi and I as rivals before we had even met each other,” Banks explained, adding, “Back then, let’s say there were 10 top models . . . but there was an unwritten rule that only one of them could be black. . . . At that time, Naomi was that one black girl.” The industry is massive now, no need to still be scared Tyra.
