The much-anticipated superhero vs. superhero extravaganza Captain America: Civil War got a good start at the box office as the film raked in Rs 8.53 crores on its opening day in India. Featuring Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in an epic battle of egos, the film fared quite well in Mumbai and Dehli and is performing better than Hindi films that released on the same day.

The film has critics and viewers raving about the intelligent and creative action sequences that go beyond just collateral damage. Dan Jolin of Empire writes, “Matching its blockbuster scale and spectacle with the smarts of a great, grown-up thriller, Captain America: Civil War is Marvel Studios’ finest film yet. There. We said it again.”

As far as the international figures go, the movie brought in $25 million from Thursday night previews, the 10th largest Thursday night number of all time (including midnight-only screenings). The number is just behind the $27.6 million posted by Avengers: Age of Ultron, last year and $27.7 million brought in by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, earlier this year.

Whether Captain America: Civil War will break the Rs 100 crore mark at the Indian box office or not, it will only be known once the weekend is over.
