Sherwani-clad Indian bride leads baraat atop horse to promote gender equality

A new wave of women empowerment has taken over the world, after the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaign brought  efforts of women seeking change in the system grounded in patriarchy  to the forefront. 

In a bid to defy cultural norms, an Indian bride belonging to Rajasthan rode a horse and led her own baraat (marriage procession) to the marriage hall.

Neha, who was clad in a sherwani and turban, stood for gender equality with this bold move.

This is part of a unique tradition in India – named Kanya Ghatari – which was practised by the Patidar community previously. However, it was long forgotten, with grooms leading their baraat more commonly.

Speaking on the occasion, Neha said that her parents wanted to let the world know that boys and girls should be treated equally.
