Mount Sinabung erupted on Monday morning, propelling rock and ash 5,000m in the air which flowed over the sides of the mountain for three miles.

According to the country’s volcanology agency, “This was the biggest eruption for Sinabung this year.”

Thick layers of ash covered the surrounding atmosphere, roads and villages. Visibility plunged an all-time low to as little as 5m.

The authorities have asked for volunteers to rescue residents who are still stuck in their houses. People are being advised to wear masks to protect them from breathing problems and lung damage.

According to National Disaster Mitigation Agency, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Airplanes have been given a ‘red notice’ due to high level of ash in the atmosphere.

After staying dormant for 400 years, Mount Sinabung came to life in 2010 and claimed life of two people, in 2014 it claimed 16 and 23 died when it erupted again in 2016.

In the last eight years, 30,000 people have fled their homes who were living close to the mountain.

Indonesia is home to 130 volcanoes due to its position in a highly active volcano place. Currently, there are three active volacanoes in the area.
