'Resident Evil' soars at the box office, defying fans' skepticism

Resident Evil did not let down, as the Sony reboot opens strongly in U.S. theatres.

The film raked in $26.3 million on its first day while playing on 3,684 screens.

That performance made Resident Evil the top new release, according to Variety.

The film is also expected to gross $55 million in its opening weekend.

If it happens, the reboot will become the biggest opening weekend in the Resident Evil franchise.

This rave response will, expectably, calm concerns among some long-time Resident Evil fans.

Previously, they cast doubt on whether the reboot would work because director Zach Cregger opted for a new story and characters that aren't necessarily established in the video game universe.

Meanwhile, the synopsis for Creggor’s Resident Evil film follows "Bryan (played by Austin Abrams), a laid-back medical/organ courier sent on a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital."

"En route through a snowy mountain road, he accidentally hits a strange woman with his car; though she survives, something is deeply wrong," the logline read.

"As he tries to help, he stumbles directly into a full-blown outbreak involving horrifying, bio-engineered mutations and must fight through hordes of infected monsters to survive."
