Russia’s gold exports to Hong Kong hit record high: What to know
Russia has moved nearly 100 tones of gold through Hong Kong in just seven months
Hong Kong has reportedly become the primary channel for Russian gold exports after Western sanctions routed unprecedented quantities of precious metals into China, according to a Financial Times report.
Gold shipments from Russia reached a historic peak of nearly 100 tonnes in the first seven months of the year, nearly tripling the volume recorded during the same period last year.
According to reports, the surge has exponentially increased the city’s share of total Chinese gold imports to over 20 percent last year, highlighting the major Asian financial hub’s function as a vital settlement center for gold trade between China and Russia.
As the western markets closed, eastern trade corridors became vital lifelines supporting Russia’s wartime economy. The report further underlined that Hong Kong has imported HK$276 billion worth of Russian gold since 2022.
Nonetheless, the rising trade volumes introduce escalating regulatory risks; moreover western banks, refiners, and logistics firms operating in Hong Kong could face cross-border sanctions exposure from Washington if their local counterparties handle Russian bullion.
In addition, since London closed its doors after the Ukraine invasion, Russia has redirected its gold east where Hong Kong and China impose no restrictions.
