First private rocket reaches orbit from Continental Europe as Isar Aerospace launches Spectrum
Isar Aerospace says its 28-metre-long Spectrum rocket blasted off into space from Andøya spaceport in Arctic Norway
German startup Isar Aerospace has successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit from the Andøya Spaceport in Arctic Norway, marking a historic milestone as the first time a privately developed commercial rocket has reached space from Western European soil.
The 28-meter (92 ft) uncrewed Spectrum rocket blasted off, crossed the 100-kilometer (62-mile) Kármán line, and successfully deployed five small satellites into orbit.
For years, Europe has heavily relied on foreign providers, predominantly Elon Musk's SpaceX—to send payloads into space, especially after cutting ties with Russian Soyuz rockets.
This is the first time a privately developed rocket has reached space from Europe, the company announced in a post on X.
This success provides Europe with a much-needed indigenous pathway to space.
The triumph comes just 18 months after Isar Aerospace's inaugural test flight tragically exploded 30 seconds after liftoff.
Backed by millions in European Space Agency (ESA) funding and growing political momentum across the continent, Isar’s success kicks off a new era of European commercial small-launcher competition, with nations like the UK and Sweden also eyeing a piece of the growing satellite delivery market.
