Canada’s Liberals send strong message with sweeping special-election victory, boosting Mark Carney
Carney’s liberals swept three special elections amid rising trade tensions
Canada’s ruling Liberal Party has reportedly won three special elections-a move that strengthens Prime Minister Mark Carney’s position in Parliament and reaffirms commitment to his government after his face off with Donald Trump.
According to Carney, the results declared after Monday voting served as a seal of approval of his government’s approach. He said in a statement: “At this consequential time for Canada, voters have placed their trust in our government's plan.”
The most radical transformation was the Quebec result in which The Liberal candidate Daniel Gobeil was poised for a major victory in Chicountimi-Le Fjord-a riding held by the opposition Conservatives since 2018. The region is known for aluminum manufacturing, dairy farms and other industries embroiled in a rising tariff war with the US.
The remaining two seats were formerly held by Liberals. Notably, Carney’s former deputy chief of Staff Breaden Caley won North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia.
US-Canada trade talks collapsed on August 21 after both sides failed to reach a deal following Trump imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20bn for Canadian goods.
Trump has frequently made statements about making Canada the 51st state. In this connection, a political science professor at McGill University said the sweep showed Carney maintaining widespread regional backing across regions, with the Quebec results being the most crucial.
The results showed that the party had about 41% of the vote in last year’s federal elections but dropped to about 13% and third place on Monday, as reported by the Guardian.
In addition, Carney won Canada's election last year which was sparked by public outrage over Trump’s unyielding stance, and he has vowed to reduce Canada’s reliance on the US.
