HMRC seeks to have Jamie Carragher declared bankrupt over tax debt

HMRC has reportedly filed a petition seeking to have former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher declared bankrupt over an alleged unpaid tax bill.

The court listings filed yesterday demonstrated that the case was filed against James Lee Duncan Carragher by a legal professional to HMRC, a prominent department of the UK government responsible for collecting taxes.

The 48-year-old is one of Liverpool’s most legendary former players having made 737 appearances for the Reds in a distinguished career.

He is ranked as the club’s second-time leading participant behind Ian Callaghan. The defender clinched a Champions League title, two FA Cups, three League Cups and a UEFa Cup during his exceptional career trajectory at Anfield.

The statement from the spokesperson reads: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering installment plans.

“This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it. It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further and will be resolved imminently.”

Carragher’s extensive medal collection also includes two FA cups and three League Cups; however, a Premier League title was the most prominent gap from Carragher’s playing career though Liverpool later ended the long wait for the trophy in 2020.
