Jeff Bezos consortium nears deal to buy more than 30% Liverpool stake

Jeff Bezos is a part of a consortium that is “nearing a deal” to buy roughly one-third stake in Liverpool.

According to Sky News reported on Monday, the consortium is led by Amit Bhatia, the British-Indian millionaire and former co-owner of QPR and the Amazon founder will participate in an investor group alongside Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook.

Last month Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the Liverpool owners, confirmed that they had been approached by the aforementioned syndicate.

As per one source privy to the matter, the announcement of the deal is expected to come in the next few days or maybe next week.

The proposed takeover would welcome three of the globe’s richest people as co-owners of Liverpool FC, a storied club with one of the most celebrated legacies in English football.

Jeff Bezos, the world’s fourth-richest man, commands a fortune estimated by Forbes at more than £207bn ($280bn), whereas Eduardo Saverin's net worth is valued at £23.7bn ($32bn).

In 2010, Liverpool was taken over by FSG and it paid around £300 million for the Reds especially at a time of financial crisis. When the new consortium showed interest in buying the stakes, the valuation of Liverpool reached £4.5 billion.

Since the takeover of Liverpool by FSG, the Reds have been known for winning two Premier League titles and Champion League.

Speaking about the deal, neither FSG nor Liverpool has not commented yet.
