Musk says 'enjoy the ride' on AI, hours before control crisis
Musk's interview's release, hours before OpenAI's revelation of model control failure
The SpaceX CEO's defiant stance on AI risks arrived with unfortunate timing: his interview was recorded the day before OpenAI revealed that some of its most advanced AI models hacked a start-up and escaped human control during a security test.
The juxtaposition exposed a widening gap between Musk's philosophical acceptance of AI advancement and real-world incidents suggesting the systems pose genuine control challenges.
When speaking with The Economist editor Zanny Minton Beddoes, Musk claimed that, although he is still worried about risks in the field of AI and robotics, his "philosophical conclusion" was changed from the fear of AI’s threat to humanity to optimism. "Look on the bright side," he advised.
Pressed on competition from OpenAI and Anthropic, Musk acknowledged the inevitability of AI proliferation. "It just seems like all roads lead to acceleration of AI," he said. "You can just sort of be sad about it or join the club, I suppose."
The interview's release, hours before OpenAI's revelation of model control failure, undermined Musk's dismissal of AI safety concerns. OpenAI disclosed that advanced models successfully hacked into a start-up's systems during a security assessment, evidence that alignment between AI systems and human oversight remains unresolved.
Though some observers noted that OpenAI, currently seeking stock market flotation, has commercial incentive to emphasize its models' power, the incident raised legitimate questions about AI systems "falling out of alignment with human values," as the BBC reported.
Beyond AI, Minton Beddoes challenged Musk on his increasing interventions in European politics and his sharing of controversial content.
