Italy approaching former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola for national team coach role

Italy have reportedly approached former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola over the vacant role as head coach of the men's national football team.

According to ESPN, Sky Sports and the Manchester Evening News, the Italian Football Federation has expressed interest in appointing Guardiola following his departure from Manchester City after the 2025-26 season.

Italy are searching for a permanent manager after Gennaro Gattuso stepped down in April. Silvio Baldini has since taken charge on an interim basis while the federation continues its search.

The four-time World Cup winners have failed to qualify for the last three World Cups, increasing pressure to rebuild the national team ahead of future international tournaments.

Guardiola, 55, spent 10 seasons at Manchester City, where he won 20 major trophies. His honours included six Premier League titles, five League Cups, three FA Cups, three FA Community Shields, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Before joining City, Guardiola also enjoyed successful spells with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, winning league titles and European honours.

According to ESPN, three other national teams have also made enquiries about Guardiola's interest in international management, although no agreement has been announced.
