Why Trump refused to leave world cup stage after Spain lifted the trophy

Spain defeated Argentina in the historic FIFA World Cup 2026 this Sunday but the celebrations of the trophy ceremony were overshadowed by Trump’s refusal to leave the stage.

After presenting Spain with the World Cup, an awkward scene unfolded as the US president forced his way into the team’s winning photo.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s attempted to guide Donald Trump away from the team after the pair had handed the trophy to Spanish captain Rodri.

However, even after Infantino stepped away and following a request from Rodri for him to clear the area, Trump remained on stage, moving to the opposite side to stand alongside the Spanish players.

Despite Infantino’s efforts, Trump declined to leave and stood applauding while the Spanish team lifted the trophy beside him and celebrated the momentous victory.

This incident is not the first of its kind. Last year, Trump also crashed the celebrations of Chelsea lifting the Club World Cup trophy.

The antics of Trump went viral on social media platforms as the fans showed mixed reactions. They also expressed frustration as Trump’s attendance resulted in heightened security and significant delays entering the stadium.

One user wrote, “How come they had him behind bullet proof glass for the match but then allow him out on the centre stage for the presentation!”

Another one commented, “No surprise Trump didn’t want to leave the stage. Love how Rodri was trying to shoo him off. Even Infantino couldn’t get him off.”

Another user expressed his frustration on X, “Trump tried to Americanise the game, upsetting most supporters around the world. A total lack of understanding !”

Prior to the match, President Trump showed his support to Argentina, arguing it is hard to bet against Messi.
