Bryce Harper says FanDuel used video without consent amid gambling lawsuit

Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper says he did not give FanDuel permission to use a personalised video for one of its customers, after the clip became part of a lawsuit involving alleged gambling addiction.

In a statement posted on Instagram on Monday, Harper said he had no knowledge of how the video would be used and would not have recorded it if he had known the circumstances.

"I did not know FanDuel would do this. I did not consent to it, and FanDuel had no right to do it,” Harper wrote on Instagram.

Harper said he received a Cameo request in November 2024 asking him to record a personal holiday message for customer Terry Thompson.

He said he was unaware the video would be used as part of a FanDuel VIP promotion: "Had I known FanDuel's true intent, I would not have made the video," Harper said on Instagram.

"The same is true had I known anything about Terry or his situation, or about any alleged 'partnership' between Cameo and FanDuel."

Thompson sued FanDuel in March, alleging the sportsbook encouraged his gambling addiction, leading to around $2 million in betting losses.

FanDuel referred ESPN to an earlier statement, saying its staff are trained to identify signs of problem gambling and that it continues to strengthen its consumer protection policies.
