The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 2,030 measles cases on Friday, rapidly approaching the 2,288 cases logged in all of 2025, which was the highest yearly total since 1991.

While the majority of patients are children and teenagers, over 92% of the infected individuals are completely unvaccinated, and nearly 6% have required hospitalization.

The state health department confirmed 154 confirmed cases since January 1. In most instances, cases have been found in Collier County-a place where an outbreak occurred at Ave Maria University.

After the details emerged in April, Virginia’s Piedmont Health District collaborated with Lynchburg-based Centra Health to offer a dispatch number to call community paramedics for home visits.

This will help in emergency situations instead of having patients show up at doctors’ offices with potential measles cases.

This setup will help healthcare workers to test an entire family and treat symptoms like high fevers and dehydration.

Dr. Chris Thomson, serving as executive vice president for Centra Health said: “By being able to get to someone who calls at an early stage of their illness and perhaps being able to go to a home and provide IV fluids to someone who’s dehydrated keeps them from becoming ill enough.”

According to Piedmont Health District Director Dr. Maria Almond, while vaccination remains the primary focus of the initiatives, the largely susceptible community has been much more receptive to feedback on isolation and quarantine.

Uncertainty remains over whether the ongoing outbreaks will cause the US to lose its status of having eliminated the virus in 2000. It is pertinent to mention that the Pan American Health Organization is expected to make a final decision this November.
