Nvidia to acquire Hugging Face in nearly $13 billion deal: Here’s why
‘Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion and enable sovereignty, said Jensen Huang’
Nvidia is reportedly planning to acquire popular AI company platform Hugging Face for nearly $12.93 billion. This major investment for open AI models aims to spur future chip demand even as Nvidia’s largest customers develop their own chips to reduce dependence on the semiconductor giant.
The chipmaker is a significant OpenAI player in the US with its commonly used Nemtron model and vocal support for the technology.
How Hugging Face will give access to its platform
Hugging Face will provide immediate access to a platform where developers used to collaborate, test and share tools, and deliver meaningful analytics and data that could help it complete the technology gap with top American and Chinese labs.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement: “Hugging face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem.”
The company’s chips are not primarily required to deploy models through Hugging Face. Under the new deal, Nvidia will pay about $11.9 billion to Hugging Face investors while also offering a stock-based compensation plan of up to $1 billion for employees who join Nvidia.
Notably, demand for open-weight models has resisted the steep climb of deploying the technology.
On the contrary, Chinese companies such as DeepSeek and Z.ai have become key market drivers through new frameworks that can match the best from the United States in crucial tasks including generating computer code at lower rates.
The primary motive behind Nvidia push to support may help mitigate a demand drop from customers such as Meta, OpenAI and Microsoft which are developing their own AI chips to decrease dependence on Nvidia’s costly supply-chain constrained processors.
Hugging Face, a platform offering datasets and cloud services to build AI model applications, was in the news after a hack by rogue AI agents that escaped OpenAI’s testing environment.
