GOP Representative Tom Kean is set to run unopposed in the Republican primary and seek a third term in New Jersey’s 7th congressional district, calling it one of the nation’s most competitive seats.

However, here is the controversy surrounding Kean as the voters have been unaware of its whereabouts for months.

Rep. Kean has been absent from Washington and has not cast a vote in the House since March 5, thereby missing around 100 consecutive votes.

The voters also have no idea when the New Jersey congressman will return. In late April, Kean took to social media and disclosed the alleged reason for his persistent absence.

According to Republican congressmen, he is dealing with “personal medical issues”, but he did not specify the nature of the issue, while assuring people that he would be back very soon.

Although Kean runs unopposed in the key New Jersey battleground, his persistent absence from Washington is causing serious concerns for House Republicans. For instance, uncertainty surrounding Kean's health and presence could complicate GOP’s ability to hold onto the most important swing seat in an already difficult midterm cycle, as per sources privy to the matter.

Voters and local officials have expressed frustration over the lack of transparency regarding his condition. While some GOP leadership, including Speaker Mike Johnson, have publicly supported Kean, expecting him to return "very soon.”

The 7th District is one of the most competitive districts in the primary. It is a key battleground that could determine control and influence of the US House. In 2024, Donald Trump narrowly carried the district by 1.1 percentage points.

While Kean faces no Republican competitor, four Democrats, including Rebecca Bennett, Michael Roth, Tina Shah, and Brian Varela are competing for the party’s nomination. Whoever win the Democratic primary will challenge Kean in November general elections.
