Who is Cole Tomas Allen: Profiles emerge of California teacher charged in WHCD shooting
Allen is a resident of Torrance, California-a coastal city in the South Bay area adjacent to Los Angeles that abuts Santa Monica Bay
In the wake of the current incident, details are emerging about Cole Tomas Allen, the 31-year-old California man arrested for Saturday night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner.
However, law enforcement officials and public records paint a picture of a highly educated professional with no previously known criminal profile.
Academic and career history
Allen is a Caltech graduate (Class of 2017) with a degree in mechanical engineering. He recently earned a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025.
On LinkedIn, Allen described himself as a “teacher by birth” and a self-employed game developer. He previously worked as a mechanical engineer for IJK Controls and served as a teaching assistant at Caltech.
In December 2024, the Torrance branch of C2 Education, a national tutoring firm, named Allen their “Teacher of the Month”. Allen donated $25 to Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in October 2024, according to Federal Election Commission records.
His social media profiles also highlight past successes in collegiate robotics competitions. DC Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll noted that investigators believe Allen was an active guest at the Washington Hilton, which may explain how he bypassed initial security perimeters.
Armed with a shotgun, Allen reportedly opened fire on a Secret Service agent outside the main ballroom.
The President, First Lady, and Vice President JD Vance were all inside the room at the time of the breach.
While his social media lists his only cause as “Science and Technology”, authorities state that a specific motive has not yet been determined.
Allen, a resident of Torrance, California, remains in federal custody as the investigation continues into how a decorated educator and engineer ended up at the center of a high-profile assassination attempt.
