Matt Damon gets candid about standing by Ben Affleck during tough times

Matt Damon "was there for all of it" for longtime pal and costar Ben Affleck, even at the time of his "divorce."

In a recent chat on The Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM, the longtime pals opened up about their off-screen bond after their Oscar-winning breakout film, Good Will Hunting.

Show host, Stern, asked Damon, “when Ben was going through all his problems,” mentioning “divorce” and, “as he admits, he had a problem with alcohol."

"Could you go to Ben and say, ‘I'm here to help you?’” Stern continued.

In response, Damon said, “Oh, yeah, our relationship isn’t affected by what people are saying.”

“I was there for all of it," he remarked.

In return, Affleck expressed his gratitude and said to his pal, “That means a lot to me. That's sort of what a real friend is.”

It is pertinent to mention that Affleck went through two highly publicized divorces. He first parted ways with ex wife Jennifer Garner in 2015 and finalized their divorce after 12 years of marriage.

Later, he tied the knot with Jenifer Lopes in 2022 and separated in 2025.

The longtime collaborator then went on to recall their early days in Hollywood following fame, Damon noted, "Your evolution gets kind of stunted at the moment you become famous because the world treats you differently.

“I think we were lucky in that we were 25 and 27, so we had a handful of years under our belt where we would walk into a room and not turn any heads.”

The pair added together, "And nobody gave a s***."
