Royal diplomatic push: King Charles, Prince William to lead 2026 US-UK trade deal
If the visit happens, it will be the first one a reigning British monarch has visited to the United States since 2007
King Charles III and Prince William are expected to make trips to the US in 2026 separately. The visit will be part of a campaign, aiming to revive a trade deal with Donald Trump.
According to the Times, the King is currently in talks related to a US visit, which is expected to take place in April, 2026.
On the other hand, the Prince of Wales will make another visit to the US later, most probably during the World Cup, hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
If the king’s visit happens, it will be the first one a reigning British monarch has visited to the United States since 2007 when Queen Elizabeth II accepted an invitation from George W Bush.
A halt in trade deal
The following news of the royal visit comes as earlier this month, the US halted multi-billion pound investment into tech over trade disputes, citing the lack of efforts from the country to lower trade barriers.
Trump’s highly-anticipated UK visit brought a plethora of investment in Britain. For instance, the US tech giants pledged to pour billions into the UK industry.
Moreover, Microsoft and Google also promised £22bn and £5bn investment respectively as part of a £31 billion trade deal. The prime minister Keir Starmer hailed this deal as “a generational step-change in our relationship with the US.”
As per reports, the slow progress in removing trade roadblocks frustrated US negotiators.
The deal was first announced in May 2025 when Britain was exempted from 20 percent tariffs that the US President imposed on goods from other countries.
As per circulating reports, the prime minister will probably not accompany the king on visit. However, Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary, will represent the government. Buckingham Palace has not commented on the announcement yet.
