A bizarre incident occurred involving golfing superstar Rory McIlroy during the second round of the 2025 Australian open, where a misstep became the latest hindrance to his Australian Open title hopes.
According to The Guardian, the world No. 2 prominent player maintained his momentum with three birdies late in his second round when he arrived on the course for an early tee time on Saturday.
After his backswing clipped a tree (earlier in the round), the Northern Irishman’s ball on the second hole found the rough and nestled under a grassy clump.
The shot was more difficult than expected with a clump of grass draping the ball, but McIlroy was unable to remove it for fear of incurring a penalty if the ball moved.
It’s a loose impediment, and it was resting on the ball. If I moved the banana peel, the ball would have moved so I just didn't even try.” McIlroy said.
He further explained, “I mean, I shouldn’t have been there in the first place, but yeah I wasn't the best to start.” Rory did not hit the green this time.
However, following an errant shot, his efforts allowed him to get enough to set up a comfortable birdie-putt, which he reportedly converted.
The 36-year-old is the Australian Open’s major drawcard, triggering electrifying interest in this year’s tournament.
He was of the view that if everything came across for him, he could definitely shoot a pretty good score there, but whether that would be good enough or not, he wasn't sure.
Nonetheless, he is committed to playing his best tomorrow, keeping his Australian Open hopes alive this weekend following his successful recovery despite the blunder.
