Brussels is planning to reportedly launch a new anti-monopoly probe into Meta Platforms regarding its integration of artificial intelligence features in WhatsApp.
According to the Financial Times, the recent move is to indicate intensified inspection of Big Tech’s use of generative AI on large platforms.
The commission was set to open the probe into how the California-based company consolidated its Meta AI system into the messaging service earlier this year.
Meta AI was first integrated into WhatsApp’s interface in March 2025 across European markets.
The company has clarified later that it has not received any sort of details of the probe and directed towards an earlier WhatsApp statement on the Italian inquiry.
An investigation was opened by Italy’s antitrust watchdog in July into allegations that Meta capitalized on its market position by integrating an AI tool into WhatsApp.
It has been observed that an examination was expanded in November to scrutinize whether Meta further abused its position by excluding rival AI chatbots from the messaging platform.
The reports elucidated that the commission would announce the investigation in the coming days though the timings would vary.
According to Financial Times, the probe will be conducted under conventional antitrust rules rather than the EU’s Digital Markets Act, the regulation used to analyze Amazon and Microsoft’s cloud services.
Nonetheless, the case is a crucial indicator for increasing EU regulatory focus on how big tech giants integrate generative AI into leading platforms.
