Leonardo DiCaprio joins Prince William with powerful plea: 'Our future depends on it'
Leonardo DiCaprio applauds $1.7 billion boost for global forest guardians
Leonardo DiCaprio made a surprise virtual cameo at the United for Wildlife Global Summit, joining forces with Prince William in urging world leaders to ramp up their fight for the planet.
Appearing via a pre-recorded message that played just before the Prince of Wales took the stage, the Oscar winner delivered one of his trademark climate reality checks, urgent, and impossible to ignore.
“This week, world leaders gather in Brazil for the first global climate summit held in the heart of the rainforest,” DiCaprio said.
“Brazil is home to 60 per cent of the Amazon, the lungs of the Earth and one of our planet’s vital life support systems.”
The actor didn’t hold back, warning that these precious ecosystems are under dire threat.
“In the past four decades, 95 per cent of Amazon deforestation has been driven by animal agriculture cutting and burning ancient forests for pasture and feed.
This destruction fuels droughts and illegal fires, accelerating a dangerous cycle that affects the entire planet and all who inhabit it.”
The star highlighted the Forest Tenure Funders Group’s impressive progress, which has already mobilised $1.7 billion (£1.3 billion) since 2021 to support those on the front lines of conservation.
He also praised the Protecting Our Planet Challenge, noting its $500 million contribution and fresh commitment to double that investment over the next five years.
Calling on Brazilian leaders to seize what he described as an “unprecedented opportunity,” DiCaprio urged governments worldwide to follow suit with strong policies and lasting funding.
“We must learn from our Indigenous partners that nature is our most powerful solution to the crisis facing climate, biodiversity, and human wellbeing,” he said.
“I urge world leaders to unite and meet this moment with courage, ambition, and bold action. After all, our future depends on it.”
