India clinch first-ever Edgbaston Test win, crush England by 336 runs
India mark their first win at the venue after failing nine times
Akash Deep became the star of India's historic victory over England by 336 runs to level the Test series at 1-1 at Edgbaston, marking their first win at the venue in nine attempts.
Deep claimed six wickets for 99 runs to achieve his maiden five-wicket haul, finishing with a total of 10 wickets in the match.
England set a daunting target of 608, struggled against the Indian bowling attack and were bowled out for 271.
The hosts had previously inflicted a humiliating defeat on India at Edgbaston three years ago, but this time, they faltered under pressure, with Jamie Smith’s half-century providing the only resistance after lunch.
Resuming on 153-6 after lunch, Jamie Smith scored a half-century but nearing another hundred with two consecutive sixes, he fell for 88 going for a third when he was caught at deep backward square to become Deep's fifth victim.
Brydon Carse provided entertainment with the bat as he went after the bowling, but he was the last man out for 38 when he skied Deep to India captain Shubman Gill who fittingly took the catch to seal a famous victory for his team.
