Aurora Borealis: Where can you watch dazzling northern lights this weekend?
Magnificent northern lights caused by solar flares seen across US, more to come
A series of strong solar flares have reached Earth creating a magnificent display of Aurora Borealis across the United States and parts of United Kingdom, CNN reported.
The coronal mass ejections hurtling towards the Earth prompted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to issue a rare "extreme" level 5 geomagnetic storm alert.
The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications by affecting satellites, GPS systems and space crafts. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude was seen in October 2003.
This Northern Light celestial event will reportedly continue through the weekend.
As the most powerful solar storm was seen across continents, social media lit up with people posting of aurora's from the US to Australia.
In the US, the spectacular light show was seen from Alabama to Northern California.
The Northern Lights are usually only visible in regions located closer to the Earth's magnetic poles like Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Canada, and Alaska.
However, due to strong solar flares, this time they were visible to a wide range of countries ranging from Russia to southern Siberia.
