An 11-year-old girl was attacked by a shark earlier this week in Hawaii, prompting fear in the nearby areas, People reported on Monday.
According to local news sources, authorities had posted shark warnings that afternoon but had later taken them down over no shark sightings.
The Honolulu Emergency Services Department’s statement said, "The girl was near shore, swimming in the water, when the incident occurred."
An eyewitness to the incident has said that the girl was attacked by what seemed like a small reef shark.
The bite occurred on the unidentified girl's left foot, but her injuries were not life-threatening, according to authorities. She is in the hospital under treatment.
The suspected shark attack comes months after a surfer died in a "shark encounter" on Hawaii's north shore on December 30.
Jason "Jay" Carter, 39, of Haiku, was surfing at Paia Bay at the time of the incident, according to Maui County.
Emergency personnel arrived on the site, and a first responder performed life-saving efforts on Carter. According to officials, the guy was transferred to the hospital and died as a result of his injuries.
