The United States Secretary of Homeland Security to Joe Biden, Alejandro Mayorkas, has been impeached by the House of Representatives, mostly voted by Republicans who blame him for the increase in migrants from the Mexico border.

This is the first time in almost 150 years that a cabinet member has been impeached, BBC reported.

The legislation was brought in by the Republican-led chamber with 214–213 votes. This is the second attempt at removing him, with the first one failing.

President Biden referred to the vote as a "political stunt" and a "blatant act of unconstitutional partisanship."

Mayorkas isn't the only Biden administration official whom Republicans have been trying to impeach.

Vice President Kamala Harris, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray, and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin are among the many people the Republicans have filed legislation to impeach.

Opponents of Mayorkas accused him of not living up to his oath to "well and faithfully discharge the duties" of his office by failing to do more to secure the border.

The vote was largely divided along party lines, with 210 Democrats voting against the impeachment, along with three Republican representatives — Tom McClintock of California, Ken Buck of Colorado and Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin.
