NAWABSHAH: A meter reader of the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company was kidnapped allegedly on the instigation of a secretary to a Sindh cabinet minister. This was alleged by the office-bearers and members of the Hydro-Electric Union (Hesco), Nawabshah, during a protest in front of the Nawabshah Press Club.

Talking to the newsmen they said that the meter reader, Rafique Lakho, was allegedly picked up by the police on the instigation of a secretary to a minister.  The protestors said that Rafique Lakho had complained to his superiors that electricity at two shops adjacent to the house of the secretary to the minister was being used from a domestic meter.

Hesco in return sent a detection bill of Rs6,000 that allegedly infuriated the secretary who retaliated by having the meter reader picked up by the police. The protesting union office-bearers threatened that they would go on strike if the meter reader was not recovered within the next 24 hours.
