Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad on Thursday inaugurated the Dow Institute of Cardiology (DIOC) at the Ojha campus of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) on the eve of its 12th foundation anniversary.

The Dow Institute of Cardiology is the third public institute of cardiovascular diseases in Karachi after the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) and Karachi Institute of Health Diseases (KIHD), and will cater to the residents of Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Safoora Goth, Sachal Goth and residents of Malir Cantt.

The governor on the occasion also inaugurated a gas power plant, that will meet the electricity requirements of the Ojha campus in the winter and half of the energy needs of the hospital in summer.

The Dow Institute of Cardiology is a tertiary-level facility established at the Ojha Campus of DUHS to specialized and affordable cardiac care to all classes of patients.

It will include departments of preventive cardiology, clinical cardiology, interventional cardiology, paediatric cardiology, cardiology electrophysiology, cardiac surgery, paediatric cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery ad anaesthesiology.

The governor said with the establishment of the cardiac institute, a longstanding demand had been fulfilled. He said the NICVD and KIHD had been providing affordable cardiac treatment to a large number of patients, yet the people living in areas including Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Malir, Safoora and Sachal Goth will now have easy access to the Dow cardiac institute that can provide them with quality treatment.

“Today by inaugurating the Dow Institute of Cardiology, the DUHS administration is fulfilling its promise to the society. The problems of a mega city that is growing at a rapid pace in an unplanned manner are sometimes beyond control. One area which, although has improved in the last few years but can still create interruptions in providing quality health care is, the electricity supply since all equipment depends upon it,” said the governor. “The DUHS has multiple standby power generators to provide uninterrupted electricity, yet by beginning to operate the one megawatt gas turbine generator is a leap forward and shows the foresight of the team at DUHS, that is leaving no stone unturned to accomplish its goal for providing health care to the citizens of this province.”
