Advice for parents
Dear parents,

Recently, I read an adolescent’s letter, which disappointed me somewhat. She was frustrated because her parents were not allowing her to study science subjects in high school. She had scored well in her Matriculation exam and wanted to study FSc. However, her parents were adamant about not allowing her to take science subjects, and wanted to get her admitted in the Humanities group, saying that Islam prohibits studying science. Consequently, the girl got desperate and chose the wrong path. She began to dodge her parents, started to lie over minor issues, and started to ignore her studies.

It’s my humble request to parents to let their kids choose the career of their own choice instead of forcing them, especially in the name of Islam. Islam says every human being, irrespective of gender, is obliged to acquire education whether it is science, accounts, sports, arts or humanities. There is no concept in Islam about not studying science. In fact, Islam says that this universe exists so that humans can discover it by means of their intelligence and that’s only possible through education. Please don’t give your children a wrong perspective of Islam; otherwise, they will never ever be able to truly practice Islam in their lives. It’s very depressing to see some people mould Islamic values to serve their own ends. There is a dire need of awareness among young people regarding true and authentic Islamic principles. Educational institutes and parents should present a true picture of Islam to young people so they can love and appreciate their religion instead of feeling restricted in certain fields of knowledge.

Feedback
Dear Ed,

I just finished reading ‘The K word’ by Muhammad Asif Nawaz. WOW! What a writer this guy is! I have read many some articles and reviews of Asif, and have always found his writings refreshing and entertaining. I am a relatively new reader and have read many letters asking you why a certain writer of yours was not writing anymore. All I can say is that you should better make sure that you don’t let go off Asif Nawaz.

Dear Ed,

In the issue of January 29, I enjoyed ‘Man vs. Machine’

by Zak Khan. Artificial Intelligence is a subject I have always been interested in, so it was good to see it featured in Us. Also, as a Pakhtun, I would like to say that it was a good effort to introduce our tradition of qissa khawani (February 5 issue) to the the rest of the country, but for the real feel you need to visit Peshawar. When I tried chappli kebab in a restaurant in Karachi, I was rather disappointed because the taste was nowhere like it is in my city. But, a good write-up by Shermeen Zuberi, I must say.

Dear Editor,

Us is doing fine, but I have been missing stories. Also, are you going to hold your story writing competition? I would also like to remind you that you just held poetry writing competition just once! Judging from the beautiful verses in ‘Poets Corner’, I think our budding poets can do with a competition, as well. And, I know it’s useless to even comment on the issue, your printing quality will succeed in making an online reader pretty soon. There, you have been warned!

Reflection
Narrated by Anas (R.A)

Once Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W) visited us in this house of ours and asked for something to drink. We milked one of our sheep and mixed it with water from this well of ours and gave it to him. Abu Bakr (R.A) was sitting on his left side and Umar in front of him and a bedouin on his right side. When Allah’s Apostle finished, Umar said to Allah’s Apostle “Here is Abu Bakr.” But Allah’s Apostle gave the remaining milk to the bedouin and said twice, “The (persons on the) right side! So, start from the right side.” Anas added, “It is a Sunna (the Prophet’s traditions)” and repeated it thrice.
